Share N Care Library

The story

It was on Nov 7th 2013, I got a chance to meet Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam during the Sharjah International Book Fair. My pencil sketch portrait was accepted by him after the speech.

After hearing his speech about having a small home library and the importance of reading, I was motivated to create awareness about reading and started working towards making my own library.

The library was inaugurated with the support of my parents and I chose the name “Share N Care Library” for my library. This library was created for children and neighbors in my residence at Qusais. The inauguration was held on Nov 2nd 2014 with its 14 founding members.

Mr. Herman Gomes, my school supervisor for grades 9 & 10, presided over the function and inaugurated the library, with a motivational speech to all of us. He also added that it was the first, in this kind of event he had attended and also gifted a book to the library. At the time of inauguration, the library had more than 450 books and 20 e-books.

Share N Care Library initiated the Read Aloud Challenge on 29th Dec 2014 to create awareness and to spread the joy of reading. 15 students from various schools in Dubai, Sharjah, and Muscat accepted this challenge and made it successful. Some of the members and non-members jointly took the Challenge for 6 continuous hours which started right after my introductory speech.

We were sure by the completion that we had spread awareness and the joy of reading among other students in the community. We hope that this challenge of readers inspires every child to read.

Keeping this in mind, a charity initiative was organized where school bags, notebooks, shoes, and stationery items were collected from various school students to support unprivileged children in underdeveloped areas.

This initiative received very good support from students & parents. Almost 30 kg of materials were collected and handed over to the two orphanage in India, namely, Bala Ashram and SIP Memorial Trust.

The 1st year anniversary celebrations was on Nov 1st 2015 and the event was kicked off by the speech of the Chief guest, Mr.Ramesh Vishwanathan, the founder and president of UAE Tamil Sangam, followed by cutting the cake and dinner. Games were conducted for the members and winners were awarded with gifts. [Add more text]

The basic needs of mankind are food, clothing and shelter. But, today even medicines have a place in this list. It has become one of those things that has gained increasing importance in this world. People with low incomes are increasingly unable to buy medicines that they require due to increasing costs.

Share N Care Library, has initiated a medicine collection drive on 3rd March to benefit those in need. The medicines that were collected were sorted out, checked for expiry, separated by the type of medicine and was be donated to a low cost charity hospital in Ajman.

It was yet another initiative which attracted a lot of school going children. It won the appreciation of the parents and teachers too. It took place in the months of March, April and May 2016, where many school students came in large numbers and exchanged their school books for the next grades. Around 50 students exchanged their books and around 40 students gave their old books to the library.

10 students and a teacher in charge visited the library on 28th May and donated some books to the library. They raised several questions about the library and its story. After clarifying their queries, I conducted a word game of 4 rounds with 4 teams and the winning team was awarded with a book each. It was a wonderful moment.

The year 2016 was announced as the ‘Year of Reading’ by the government of UAE. To showcase the efforts of the citizens in supporting the initiative of the government, the newspaper again reached out to the library to spread its initiatives.

This brought the library out in public light and the initiative spread out to more and more people.

The medicine donation drive that was started to put the excess medicines to use successfully ended by the library donating almost fifty kilograms to a Charity Hospital in Ajman.

This initiative would later pave the way to the second collection drive that saw the collection of more than 200 kg of medicines being handed over to the hospital to be checked and redistributed.

The library conducted a competition to promote reading by the title ‘Celebrate Reading’ also supporting the Government’s initiative of declaring this year as the ‘Year of Reading’.

This competition was focussed across three age categories and the awarding ceremony was set to happen on the Second anniversary of the library.

The library's 2nd Anniversary was celebrated on 29th Oct 2016 in the library premises with the guests of honor

Mr.Raja Mohammed, Ex. Director,

Department of Museums, TamilNadu.

Mr.Muduvai Hidayath,

The winners of the 'Celebrate Reading ' competition were also felicitated during the event.

More than thirty members took part in the anniversary celebration.

The Library Debate Society was inaugurated on 7th November with the inaugural session to discuss about the further proceedings. A well received idea, the sessions were held for a year before the library was relocated.

The second medicine collection drive was responsible for collecting and redistributing around 200kg of medicines plus medical auxiliaries.

This was the biggest collection by the library so far and was very well received by the hospital and the public.
